A faculty member from a well-known educational institution in Chennai has been suspended for allegedly striking a third-grade student who was unable to recite a Hindi poem. The school administration announced on Monday that the teacher was removed from duty after an internal inquiry conducted on February 21.

According to an official, who requested anonymity, the school became aware of the incident last Friday. The teacher was accused of punishing the child for failing to recall the poem, leading to her suspension post-investigation.

Despite the disciplinary action, the official emphasized that the matter primarily involved the teacher and the student’s parents.

The incident occurred at Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram, a CBSE-affiliated institution known for its strict anti-violence stance. The student’s parents escalated the issue to the management, which upholds a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against any form of mistreatment.

School regulations strictly prohibit any form of corporal punishment, including physical, verbal, or psychological harm. The teacher’s suspension aligns with these guidelines, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to student welfare.

This case adds to a growing concern over disciplinary actions in schools, reigniting discussions on the need for non-violent teaching methods.
