A 14-year-old boy died after coming into contact with an overhead electrical wire while posing for photographs atop a stationary train at Thakurli Yard in Thane district on Thursday night.
The deceased, identified as Yagya Suresh Shetty, a resident of Dombivli West, had reportedly gone to the railway yard with two friends instead of attending his regular coaching classes, according to an official.
Teen climbed onto train roof for photographs
The official said Yagya climbed onto the roof of a stationary train while his two friends remained on the ground and used a mobile phone to photograph him.
While on the carriage roof, the boy accidentally touched or came dangerously close to the live overhead traction wire. He suffered an electric shock, was rendered unconscious and fell from the roof of the train, the official said.
He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The incident has once again highlighted the serious dangers of entering railway yards and climbing onto train coaches, even when trains are stationary.
Police register accidental death report
Vishnunagar police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the official said.
Railway yards and train roofs can pose serious risks because overhead traction systems may remain energised even when a train is stationary. Coming close to such wires can result in fatal electric shocks without direct physical contact.
The incident has left the teenager’s family and friends grieving and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with attempting photographs or videos in restricted railway areas.
