A 17-year-old boy in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj allegedly died by suicide on Valentine’s Day following disagreements with his girlfriend, even as his family has raised suspicions of possible foul play.
The deceased has been identified as Aman Giri, an intermediate student who was preparing for the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination. Police said he was found hanging, and upon receiving information, they rushed to the spot and brought down the body.
According to preliminary findings, a letter recovered from the scene suggested that his girlfriend wanted to end their relationship. The two reportedly met at a coaching centre and had been in a relationship for the past eight months. In recent days, the relationship had reportedly become strained, with the girl expressing her desire to break up.
Family alleges murder
However, the victim’s family has disputed the suicide theory. His sister, Nidhi Giri, alleged that Aman was murdered and indirectly blamed the girl and one of his friends.
She claimed that the girl had fallen in love with someone else and that frequent disputes followed. The family further alleged that the boy was assaulted by some of the girl’s friends and that his mobile phone was taken away.
The victim’s uncle, Dhirendra Pratap Giri, questioned the circumstances of the death, stating that the position of the body raised doubts about suicide.
Family members have lodged a complaint against the girl and her associates, accusing them of blackmail. They alleged that Aman had even handed over his mother’s jewellery under pressure.
Police probe underway
Police have detained some individuals for questioning and are investigating all angles of the case. Officials stated that further clarity will emerge after forensic examination and detailed inquiry.
The tragic incident has left the local community shaken, as authorities work to ascertain whether it was a case of suicide or something more sinister.
