In a fresh revelation in the death of Sahil Dhaneshra, it has emerged that the teenager driving the SUV that caused the fatal crash in Dwarka had falsely claimed to be 19 years old.
According to officials, the boy told police he was 19. However, his birth certificate shows he was born on August 2, 2009, making him 16 and legally ineligible to hold a driving licence.
Crash near Lal Bahadur Shastri College
The accident occurred at 11.57 am on February 3 near Lal Bahadur Shastri College. The minor was driving a Scorpio with his sister as co-passenger when he allegedly rammed Sahil’s sports bike head-on before hitting a taxi.
A video filmed by his sister reportedly shows the SUV speeding on a two-lane road without a divider, narrowly missing a bus moments before the collision. Records indicate that 13 challans had previously been issued against the Scorpio, including nine for speeding.
Sahil, 23, was rushed to hospital but was declared dead. The taxi driver sustained injuries.
Juvenile Justice Board grants interim bail
Upon verifying the driver’s age, police detained him and presented him before the Juvenile Justice Board, which granted interim bail considering his ongoing Class 10 board examinations.
The case has triggered outrage, with questions raised about repeated traffic violations and enforcement.
Sahil’s mother, Inna Maakan, recalled the scene with anguish. “My son was lying on the road. His sports bike was in three parts, and his jacket was shredded,” she said, alleging delays in medical response.
Posters in Sahil’s room reflected his aspirations. One read, “They want to fly first class. I want to own the plane.” Another declared, “2025 will be my $1 million year.”
As investigations continue, the incident has reignited debate over underage driving and road safety enforcement.
