A 14-year-old girl was found hanging at her home in Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday, with her family alleging that she had been under severe stress after the man earlier booked for misconduct against her was released on bail and reportedly threatened her.
According to the family, the girl was alone at home when the incident occurred. Her father, a farm labourer, and her mother, who had gone to collect firewood, found her hanging after they returned.
Allegations of intimidation after bail
The girl’s father stated that on January 10, his daughter had gone to a nearby field when Lavlesh Kumar (25) allegedly behaved inappropriately with her and fled after she raised an alarm. A complaint was lodged, and an FIR was registered. The accused was arrested and sent to jail.
However, after securing bail about a week ago, he allegedly approached the girl near a local shop and warned her against pursuing the case. The father claimed that his daughter appeared frightened and mentally distressed following the encounter.
Fresh case registered under law
Following the death, police registered a fresh FIR under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Circle Officer Shivam Kumar confirmed that the accused was arrested again and sent to jail on Friday.
Police said further investigation is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the case and determine accountability.
