An 18-year-old degree student died after drowning at a private swimming pool in Alwal on Sunday evening, prompting police to register a case of negligence against the pool management.
The deceased, identified as Vaishnavi, was pursuing a degree course at a city college. According to police, she had visited the V V Swimming Pool located in Suryanagar for a swim.
Allegedly did not know how to swim
Preliminary reports indicate that Vaishnavi entered the pool despite not knowing how to swim. She reportedly drowned during the session.
On receiving information, local police rushed to the spot and shifted her to a hospital, where she was declared dead.
Officials stated that a case has been registered against the management of the swimming facility for alleged negligence. Further investigation is under way to ascertain whether proper safety measures, including lifeguard supervision and standard operating procedures, were in place at the time of the incident.
Safety concerns under scrutiny
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over safety compliance at private swimming pools, particularly regarding monitoring of inexperienced swimmers.
Police said statements are being recorded and CCTV footage, if available, will be examined as part of the probe.
Authorities have urged swimming pool operators to strictly adhere to safety norms and ensure adequate supervision to prevent such incidents.
The sudden loss of the young student has left her family and peers in deep grief.
