A deeply distressing incident in Maharashtra’s Beed district has once again drawn attention to adolescent mental health and the importance of emotional communication within families.

Incident in Kaij area

Police said a 15-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide on Sunday in the Kaij area after being denied permission to go out and play with a friend. The boy, a Class 9 student, was at home when his friend visited around 10 am and asked him to come out to play.

According to officials, the boy’s mother advised him to stay indoors because of the rising temperature and suggested that he go out later in the evening. The refusal, made in front of his friend, reportedly left the teenager distressed.

Sequence of events

Police said the boy went into his parents’ bedroom, locked the door from inside and allegedly attempted to take his life by hanging from the ceiling fan. His mother, who was busy with household chores in the kitchen, did not initially sense anything unusual.

Around 1.30 pm, when the bedroom door remained locked, she raised an alarm. Neighbours broke open the door and found the boy lying unresponsive on the floor. He was rushed to the sub-district hospital in Kaij and later referred to a government hospital in Ambajogai, about 40 km away. However, he died while being taken there.

Police action and wider concern

The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination, and Kaij police have registered a case. Officials said further inquiry is underway.

The incident has sparked concern among residents and educators, underlining how moments that may appear minor to adults can feel overwhelming to adolescents. Mental health experts stress the need for parents and caregivers to watch for emotional distress and encourage open conversations with children.
