Yadadri Bhuvanagiri: Years of patient saving turned into a memorable moment for a family in Telangana after a man purchased a new motorcycle by paying the entire amount in ₹10 coins collected over nearly eight years. The unusual transaction at a motorcycle showroom in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district drew crowds, captivated social media users and highlighted that ₹10 coins continue to be legal tender despite persistent misconceptions.
Konde Raghupathi, a resident of Veliminedu village in Chityala mandal, bought a Hero Splendor Plus motorcycle from Sri Vinayaka Motors for ₹1.10 lakh, paying entirely with bags filled with ₹10 coins. While the payment method surprised the showroom staff, they accepted it after Raghupathi informed them in advance about his plan.
Family’s eight-year savings dream comes true
Raghupathi, along with his wife and two children, began saving ₹10 coins in 2017 with a single goal—to one day own a motorcycle.
Instead of spending the coins received during daily transactions, the family carefully set them aside over the years. Their disciplined savings continued despite widespread rumours in several parts of the country that ₹10 coins were no longer accepted as legal tender.
Confident that the coins remained valid currency, the family persisted with their savings plan, gradually accumulating enough money to purchase a new motorcycle outright.
Their long-term commitment eventually culminated in the purchase of a Hero Splendor Plus, one of India’s most popular commuter motorcycles.
Bags of coins attract attention
The motorcycle showroom witnessed an unusual scene when Raghupathi arrived carrying multiple bags filled with ₹10 coins.
After spreading the coins across tables and counters, five showroom employees spent nearly four hours counting and verifying the amount before completing the transaction.
The rare sight attracted curious residents from the locality, many of whom gathered outside the showroom to watch the counting process.
The incident soon became a major talking point in the area, with videos and photographs of the transaction circulating widely on social media.
Showroom honours customer’s determination
Showroom owner Uppu Madhu said Raghupathi had informed the dealership beforehand that he intended to pay using ₹10 coins.
Although the staff initially had reservations because of the time and effort required to count such a large quantity of coins, they eventually agreed after learning about the family’s years of disciplined saving.
The dealership completed the sale after verifying the payment and handed over the motorcycle to Raghupathi.
The incident was widely appreciated by those present, many of whom praised both the family’s perseverance and the showroom’s willingness to accommodate the unusual payment.
₹10 coins remain legal tender
The incident has also drawn attention to a common misconception surrounding ₹10 coins.
Over the years, rumours have occasionally circulated claiming that ₹10 coins are no longer valid or accepted. However, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has repeatedly clarified that all ₹10 coins issued by the central bank remain legal tender across the country.
The RBI has urged businesses and members of the public not to refuse genuine ₹10 coins, stating that doing so is against the law.
Raghupathi’s purchase serves as a practical demonstration that ₹10 coins continue to retain their full monetary value and can be used for transactions of any size.
Social media praises family’s patience
The family’s story has received widespread appreciation online, with many users describing it as an inspiring example of financial discipline and perseverance.
Several social media users praised the family’s ability to stay committed to their goal for nearly eight years, while others highlighted the importance of consistent savings in achieving long-term aspirations.
The incident has also sparked conversations about the value of small but regular savings, showing how modest contributions accumulated over time can help fulfil significant financial goals.
Beyond its novelty, the purchase stands as a reminder that disciplined saving, patience and determination can turn even ambitious dreams into reality. It also reinforces the RBI’s repeated clarification that ₹10 coins remain legal tender and should be accepted without hesitation in everyday transactions.
