Chandigarh: A suspected terror plot has been foiled in Chandigarh after police arrested three people and recovered an improvised explosive device, explosives and a firearm near the Sector 43 bus stand, according to police and media reports.
The arrests followed intelligence inputs received by Chandigarh Police about the movements of people suspected of having links to Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), a banned terrorist organisation. Police subsequently launched an operation and detained three suspects.
Three suspects arrested
The three arrested men are reportedly from Punjab and are aged between 19 and 21. Police said they were suspected of being connected to a wider network and were being questioned as part of the investigation.
Authorities recovered an explosive device, a quantity of gelatin sticks, a firearm and other related material from the suspects, according to the reports. The seized items have been sent for forensic examination.
Police are also investigating the suspected links between the arrested men and an overseas-based individual allegedly associated with BKI. Investigators are working to establish the nature of these contacts and whether others were involved.
Security tightened in Chandigarh
The recovery near a busy transport hub has prompted increased security measures in the city. Police have appealed to residents to remain alert but not panic as the investigation continues.
Officials are examining where the seized material came from and whether the suspects were acting on instructions from others.
