Train journeys in India remain a popular way to travel long distances. Along the way, vendors offering everything from fruits and beverages to toys and trinkets keep passengers entertained and satisfied. However, the most in-demand seller is undoubtedly the chaiwala (tea vendor). While some of them are employed by railway catering services, others board trains from outside.
But have you ever wondered how these vendors prepare your cup of tea? A viral video might make you think twice before ordering tea on your next train trip.
The video, shared by Ayub on Instagram, shows a tea vendor entering a train bathroom after running out of supplies. He proceeds to wash his tea utensils using the toilet’s water pipe. This pipe, typically used for personal hygiene, is what he uses to clean the cups and pots. Despite the unhygienic conditions in the bathroom, he shows no concern. The video, filmed secretly by someone close to him, doesn’t reveal the tea vendor’s full face.
This disturbing footage has been gaining rapid popularity on Instagram, amassing over 110 million views. Additionally, it has been shared by 3.4 million users, with 565,000 likes and 9,000 comments. Many viewers expressed disgust, with one commenting, “I’m watching this video while drinking tea on the train,” and another tagging the railway minister to demand action.
