Two daring thieves, P Karthik from Andhra Pradesh and Balan from Tamil Nadu, who posed as “deaf and mute” to avoid suspicion, were apprehended by Delhi Police after a string of targeted thefts across Delhi-NCR. Their crimes focused on stealing high-value electronics like laptops and mobile phones from student-dominated areas.
The duo’s unusual modus operandi involved feigning disability to evade questioning. If caught, they would use gestures to communicate, carrying fake disability certificates and letters claiming to seek donations for orphanages or schools for the disabled.
Their ploy nearly worked during a routine police check while traveling by motorcycle from Gurugram to Nehru Place. Initially, they tried to communicate through gestures and presented donation letters, but officers grew suspicious and searched their belongings. The search uncovered 16 stolen mobile phones and 6 laptops.
During interrogation, Karthik and Balan confessed to targeting student residences near educational institutions. They traveled by train from their home states to Delhi, roaming early in the morning to identify homes. Posing as charity workers, they gained entry, stole valuables, and quickly fled to their hometowns to sell the items at discounted prices.
Delhi Police’s Special Staff team acted on a tip-off, using both manual and technical surveillance to track the suspects. DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan lauded the meticulous efforts of his team in exposing the thieves’ elaborate scheme.
