Chhatarpur: Three minor sisters, including a nine-month-old infant, have died under suspicious circumstances in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district after reportedly falling ill following a meal of baingan bharta (mashed brinjal) and roti.

The deceased have been identified as Poonam, 7, Manisha, 3, and Chahat, 9 months, daughters of Balmukund Kushwaha of Pipora Khurd village.

Girls fell ill after eating baingan bharta

According to police, the children reportedly fell ill after 3 am after consuming baingan bharta and roti. They developed symptoms including vomiting and diarrhoea.

Two of the girls were taken to a hospital at around 7 am, where they died during treatment.

The family later buried the bodies in their ancestral village, Panota, without informing police or conducting post-mortem examinations.

Police begin process to exhume bodies

Matguwa police received information about the deaths at around 10.30 am and visited the spot to verify the details.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the death of nine-month-old Chahat remain unclear. Officials are investigating whether the deaths were connected to the food consumed by the children or another cause.

A police team has visited the burial site and authorities have begun the process of exhuming the bodies for post-mortem examinations.

Post-mortem reports to establish cause

The autopsy reports are expected to establish whether the deaths were caused by food poisoning, an illness or another factor.

Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the post-mortem examinations. The exact cause of the deaths has not yet been established.
