Changchun : A tiger keeper at the Jilin Provincial Siberian Tiger Park in Changchun, northeast China, has been suspended after a video circulating online appeared to show him kicking a four-and-a-half-month-old tiger cub during feeding. The cub has since recovered and was found to be in good health following a veterinary examination.
The incident, which took place on August 30, drew strong reactions from visitors and online users after footage appeared to show the young tiger lying motionless on the ground following an apparent kick by the keeper.
Video sparks concern over treatment of tiger cub
The footage circulating online showed the cub on the ground before the keeper carried it towards a feeding bowl. The animal did not appear to eat, while visitors could be heard questioning the manner in which the keeper had handled the protected animal.
The video quickly attracted attention, prompting concerns about the treatment and welfare of animals under human care.
Park officials subsequently examined the cub with the assistance of veterinarians after receiving a complaint from a visitor on Sunday afternoon.
Park says footage did not show the full incident
A park employee confirmed that the incident had occurred but said the footage circulating online did not show the entire sequence of events.
According to the employee, the tiger cub had bitten the keeper on the foot while being fed and would not release its grip. The keeper reportedly reacted instinctively by shaking the animal off.
The explanation came after criticism was directed at the keeper over the apparent treatment of the cub. The park said the animal experienced a brief stress response following the incident but later recovered.
Veterinary examination finds cub in good condition
The Jilin Provincial Siberian Tiger Park said a comprehensive examination of the cub found its health indicators to be normal.
