A tragic incident unfolded in Keezhpathi village near Srimushnam in Cuddalore district on Monday, where a one-and-a-half-year-old boy died after he slipped into an overflowing stormwater drain in front of his home and was washed away. The deceased child has been identified as P. Sai Rakshan, son of Palanivel (40), a fisherman from the village.
According to police, Palanivel had travelled on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala, leaving his wife P. Deepa (34) and their two children — Sai Lokesh (3½) and Sai Rakshan — at home. The siblings were watching the water flow through the stormwater drain when the younger child accidentally slipped and fell in.
Rescue efforts by neighbours and fire personnel
Deepa was alerted by her elder son, who saw his brother being swept away by the strong current. Neighbours immediately contacted the Fire and Rescue Services, who reached the location quickly and began searching downstream.
Rescue personnel located the child about 50 metres from the house. A fireman attempted to resuscitate the unconscious toddler using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but despite repeated efforts, the child did not respond.
Sai Rakshan was rushed to the nearby Primary Health Centre, where the duty doctor declared him “brought dead.”
Police register case, inquiry begins
The Cholatharam police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which pertains to inquiries and reports related to accidental or suspicious deaths. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any preventive safety measures in the locality require attention.
Concerns over open drains in residential areas
Residents of Keezhpathi expressed grief and concern over the dangers posed by open and overflowing stormwater drains, especially during the monsoon. Several families in low-lying areas have urged local authorities to cover or reinforce vulnerable sections to prevent similar tragedies.
Community in mourning
The death of young Sai Rakshan has left the village in deep shock. Neighbours said the child was playful and well-loved in the community. Local authorities have assured that steps will be taken to review safety conditions around residential drains in the area.
