A one-year-nine-month-old child died after being allegedly strangled inside a park in the Mukherji Nagar area of Delhi on Friday afternoon, police said.

According to the Delhi Police, a call was received around 1.30 pm reporting that a woman had attacked the toddler. The caller identified the accused as 30-year-old Azra.

Child rushed to hospital

Witnesses said a gardener working in the park noticed the woman allegedly choking the child and raised an alarm. Local residents intervened, rescued the child and rushed him to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The child, identified as Hadi, son of Adil and a resident of Old Seelampur, had come with his mother Uzma to visit her maternal home. The child’s maternal uncle alerted the police.

Accused under medical examination

Police said the accused was found unconscious after the incident and was shifted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital for medical examination. She has since been taken into custody.

The child’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination at the same hospital. A case has been registered and investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the incident.

Further legal action will follow based on the findings of the inquiry, police added.
