A viral social media post has once again ignited discussions on the need for responsible tourism in India, emphasizing the importance of travelers managing their own waste. The debate surfaced after a Reddit user shared images of gutka stains and plastic waste tarnishing the pristine white snow at an altitude of over 9,000 feet, triggering widespread criticism and concern.
The photos depict discarded gutka packets, plastic bottles, and snack wrappers scattered across the snow, despite the fact that only around 100 tourists were present at the location. The post was captioned, “Even at 9,000 feet, with barely 100 tourists around, there’s gutka and litter everywhere. Why can’t Indian tourists clean up after themselves?”
The post rapidly gained traction, drawing sharp reactions from netizens. Many expressed disappointment and embarrassment over the lack of environmental responsibility. One user remarked, “It’s disheartening to witness such disregard for nature. People must recognize their impact on these breathtaking locations.”
Another pointed out, “Ironically, the same individuals behave responsibly when abroad, fearing consequences.”
Some called for stricter measures, with one suggesting, “Authorities should install cameras and publicly shame litterers on digital billboards—maybe then they’ll understand.”
Another added, “India can’t progress unless its citizens develop civic consciousness first.”
The incident has fueled demands for stricter penalties and greater awareness to preserve the nation’s natural beauty.
