Pune: Pune’s Haveli police have registered a case against nine people following allegations that tourists were assaulted and harassed for around two hours at Sinhagad Fort over the clothing worn by an eight-year-old girl.
Dispute reportedly began over child’s clothing
According to police, the incident occurred on August 16 when the fort was crowded with weekend visitors. A family was reportedly stopped after members of a group questioned why the young girl was wearing shorts.
An argument followed, during which a young man was allegedly assaulted. Police said the accused claimed to be members of a group called the ‘Fort Conservation Society’.
The confrontation reportedly escalated as more visitors were questioned over what the group considered “inappropriate” clothing.
Police register case against nine
Pune Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill said the tourists were allegedly intimidated for nearly two hours. Police have registered a case against nine individuals in connection with the incident.
The allegations have raised concerns over moral policing at a popular tourist destination and the manner in which visitors, particularly families and children, are treated at public heritage sites.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the identities and roles of those allegedly involved.
Incident sparks concern over tourist safety
Sinhagad Fort is one of Maharashtra’s prominent historical attractions and receives large numbers of visitors, particularly during weekends and holidays.
The incident has renewed discussion about the need for visitors to be able to enjoy public heritage spaces without intimidation or harassment. Any concerns regarding dress or conduct should be addressed through lawful and authorised mechanisms rather than confrontation or violence.
The police investigation will determine responsibility and whether further action is required.
