A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district when at least 12 passengers were killed after being struck by the Karnataka Express. Railway officials stated that the passengers, who were traveling on the Lucknow-CSMT Pushpak Express, had exited the train after rumors of a fire spread. The incident took place while the passengers were on the tracks, and the collision left 15 others injured.
According to the officials, both train drivers followed the necessary protocols to prevent the accident. The senior official from Central Railway explained that the driver of the Lucknow-CSMT Pushpak Express had activated the flasher light as required when the train came to a stop between Maheji and Pardhade stations, over 400 km from Mumbai. Upon seeing the signal, the driver of the Karnataka Express applied the brakes. However, the track’s curvature reportedly reduced the visibility and affected the braking distance, leading to the tragic collision.
Officials further revealed that trains in this area operate at speeds exceeding 100 km/h, as it is part of a major trunk route. The investigation is ongoing, and preliminary findings suggest that the track curvature played a significant role in the accident.
