Hyderabad: A trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer undergoing training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad allegedly attempted suicide on Monday after being booked in a sexual harassment case filed by a fellow woman trainee IPS officer from Karnataka.
The officer, identified as M. Udayakrishna Reddy, was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad after he was found unconscious at a relative’s residence. His condition is being monitored, while police continue to investigate the criminal case registered against him.
Officer hospitalised after suspected suicide attempt
According to family members, Reddy visited a relative’s house in Hyderabad’s S.R. Nagar on Monday morning.
He is suspected to have consumed an unidentified liquid, following which he lost consciousness.
Relatives immediately shifted him to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
There has been no official medical bulletin regarding his condition.
Sexual harassment case registered
Reddy was booked by Attapur Police on Saturday following a complaint lodged by a fellow trainee IPS officer.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant alleged that the accused had been harassing her since June 23 by sending sexually abusive messages through WhatsApp and making derogatory remarks in the presence of other trainee officers.
The woman officer further alleged that Reddy spread false rumours about her personal life and repeatedly accused her of having an illicit relationship with another trainee officer without any evidence.
She claimed he repeatedly pressured her to admit to the allegation.
Allegations of assault and intimidation
In her complaint, the trainee officer alleged that on July 8, the accused took her mobile phone to his room, compelled her to disclose its password and accessed her private messages without consent.
She also accused him of secretly recording a private video without her knowledge and sending it to her husband in an alleged attempt to blackmail her and damage her reputation.
The complainant further alleged that on the night of July 9, the accused wrongfully restrained her, forcibly took her to his room, grabbed her by the hair, attempted to strangle her and held a knife to her neck while preventing her from leaving.
She also alleged that he groped her and attempted to touch her private parts.
These allegations have been made in the FIR, and the investigation is ongoing. The accused is entitled to due process, and the allegations are yet to be tested in court.
Case registered under BNS and IT Act
Based on the complaint, Attapur Police registered FIR No. 824/2026 under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to assault, criminal intimidation and offences against women.
Relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2008, have also been invoked.
Police are continuing their investigation into the allegations.
From constable to IPS officer
Reddy hails from Ullapalem village in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh.
His journey into the civil services had drawn widespread attention after he rose from humble beginnings to become an IPS officer.
Having lost both his parents at a young age, he was raised by his grandmother, Ramanamma, who earned a living by selling vegetables.
After completing his education in a government school, he joined the Andhra Pradesh Police as a constable in 2013, serving at Gudluru and Ramayapatnam Marine Police Stations.
He resigned from service in 2018 to prepare full-time for the Civil Services Examination.
Following several unsuccessful attempts, he secured an All India Rank (AIR) 780 and joined the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS).
He appeared for the examination once again during training and improved his performance, securing AIR 350, which earned him selection to the Indian Police Service.
His success story was widely appreciated, including by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, who had congratulated him publicly after his achievement.
The investigation into the criminal allegations and the circumstances surrounding Monday’s suspected suicide attempt are continuing.
