A 41-year-old tribal man allegedly died by suicide after facing sustained harassment and blackmail by cyber criminals in Tippapuram village of Venkatapuram mandal in Mulugu district, police said on Monday, highlighting the growing threat of cybercrime in rural areas.

Mobile phone hacked after clicking suspicious link

The deceased has been identified as Koram Rama Rao. According to the police, his mobile phone was allegedly hacked around 15 days ago after he clicked on a suspicious link received via WhatsApp. Cyber criminals are believed to have gained access to his personal photographs and sensitive data stored on the device.

Police said the accused allegedly began blackmailing Rama Rao, threatening to make the private information public if their demands were not met.

Harassment caused severe mental distress

Venkatapuram sub-inspector K. Tripathi said the harassment intensified over the past few days, pushing Rama Rao into severe mental distress. Fearing damage to his reputation and the safety of his family, he allegedly took the extreme step on Saturday afternoon.

Before his death, Rama Rao reportedly left behind a suicide note addressed to the police, detailing the mental torture he endured and urging authorities to trace the cyber criminals responsible. He also appealed for protection for his family.

Died during treatment at hospital

Family members rushed Rama Rao to the Venkatapuram Community Health Centre. From there, he was shifted to the Mulugu District Hospital and later referred to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital for advanced treatment. He died while undergoing treatment, police said.

Rama Rao is survived by his wife, a daughter studying Intermediate, and a son studying Class X.

Case registered, investigation underway

Police have registered a case and seized the victim’s mobile phone, which has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for detailed digital analysis. Another sub-inspector, Tirupati, said efforts are underway to trace the source of the malicious link and identify those behind the alleged extortion.

Police have urged the public to remain cautious while clicking unknown links and to report cyber harassment immediately.
