Agartala: The Tripura State Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind has called for stern action against those responsible for defacing an idol of Goddess Kali and for setting several houses on fire in West Tripura district. The organisation expressed deep concern over the incident and criticised the legal system after the individuals arrested for arson were granted bail.

Call for Justice and Compensation

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Mufti Taybur Rahman, president of the Tripura Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind, stated that the organisation had met with West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar to submit a memorandum demanding justice. “We have demanded punishment for those who defaced the idol of Goddess Kali and set eight houses on fire,” Rahman said. He also highlighted the need for compensation for those whose houses were destroyed in the attack.

Rahman raised concerns about the legal process, questioning how those arrested for the arson were granted bail. “The SP informed us that the police have no control over bail decisions and suggested we approach the court to address our concerns,” Rahman added.

Incident in Durganagar

The incident that sparked the unrest occurred on August 26 in Durganagar, West Tripura district, where an idol of Goddess Kali was defaced. Following the desecration, a group of miscreants set fire to at least eight houses and 13 vehicles. The police responded by registering a suo motu FIR and arresting five individuals in connection with the incident.

However, the situation escalated when locals blocked the national highway on Thursday, demanding the release of the arrested individuals. The same day, a local court granted bail to those arrested, further fuelling tensions in the area.

Political Reactions

The incident has also drawn attention from political leaders in the state. Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma condemned the violence and demanded the arrest of all those involved in both the desecration of the Kali idol and the subsequent arson in Durganagar.

“Tripura has witnessed communal violence in the past, often driven by political motivations. Whether it is the BJP, Congress, or CPI(M), politicians have been behind such incidents. We want those responsible for this violence to be held accountable,” Debbarma said, referencing previous incidents of communal violence in Gandacherra and Ranirbazar.

Seeking Accountability

As tensions remain high in the region, the Tripura Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind and other community leaders are calling for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible. The organisation’s demand for justice and compensation reflects the broader concerns of the affected community, who are seeking both accountability and support in the aftermath of the violence.

The Tripura Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind’s engagement with local authorities and their public demands underscore the importance of addressing communal tensions and ensuring that such incidents are met with a swift and just response.
