New Delhi: US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his stance against what he called “unjust” tariffs imposed by India and several other countries, declaring that the United States would enforce equivalent tariffs starting April 2.

Speaking at a Joint Session of Congress, Trump emphasized that foreign nations, including India, China, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada, have long imposed significantly higher tariffs on US exports compared to what the US levies on their imports.

“It’s time for us to respond in kind,” he stated, highlighting that India, for instance, charges over 100% tariffs on American automobiles.

Trump asserted that his administration would not make exceptions, including for India, despite recent discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington. He declared that the new tariff policies would match the rates other countries impose on American goods.

“If they tariff us, we will tariff them. If they impose non-monetary barriers, we will do the same,” he explained, justifying his long-standing demand for “fair” trade practices.

His announcement follows a series of trade restrictions placed on China, Mexico, and Canada, citing concerns over illegal immigration and economic security.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau strongly condemned the move, accusing Trump of undermining Canada’s economy while ignoring geopolitical tensions involving Russia and Ukraine.

The global response to these tariffs remains critical as nations assess their trade relations with the US.
