THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a dramatic turn in the death of 2.5-year-old Devendu, Kerala police have moved court seeking permission to conduct polygraph tests on the child’s mother Sreethu and her brother Harikumar, following Harikumar’s latest confession that Sreethu killed the child.
Harikumar, who is currently in judicial custody, reportedly told Rural SP K S Sudarsan that Sreethu was responsible for Devendu’s death — a charge that aligns with earlier suspicions raised by the child’s father Sreejith. However, Sreethu had not been arrested earlier due to a lack of concrete evidence.
She was later jailed in an unrelated financial fraud case, and her involvement in the child’s death is now under renewed scrutiny. The chargesheet, which police had planned to file this month, has been temporarily put on hold as a more detailed investigation begins.
Devendu was allegedly thrown into a well near the family’s rented home in Kottukalkonam, Balaramapuram, by Harikumar in January. Initially reported missing, the child’s body was later found by police and fire officials. The postmortem confirmed drowning as the cause of death with no external injuries.
Though Harikumar confessed, his motive remained unclear. Now, contradictory statements from Harikumar, Sreethu, and their mother Sreekala, along with deleted chats between the siblings, have deepened police suspicion.
Devendu was the daughter of Sreethu and Sreejith, a couple living separately. Sreejith had reportedly visited the house just two days before the child’s death, during a ritual for Sreethu’s deceased father.
