In Sivaganga district, two brothers were brutally beaten to death by a mob on Monday midnight, accused of attempting to steal goats from a farm.

Police identified the deceased as 31-year-old S Manikandan and 24-year-old S Sivasankaran, residents of Kattanipatti, who had prior theft records. The incident occurred at a farm owned by Subbu in Alagamanagiri, within the Madagupatti police jurisdiction.

Around midnight, the brothers allegedly tried to escape with goats and chickens from the farm. Some villagers who had come to check on a jallikattu bull noticed the suspicious activity and alerted others.

A crowd soon gathered, caught Manikandan and Sivasankaran as they fled, and subjected them to severe assault with sticks, punches, and kicks.

Sivaganga Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat said police reached quickly to find the brothers gravely injured. They were rushed in a 108 ambulance to Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital but succumbed to their wounds.

Madagupatti police have registered a case. The bodies were sent for autopsy.

As of Tuesday evening, six men—S Thirupathi (45), A Somaraj (31), R Prabhu (30), V Deepak (19), S Vignesh (31), and R Dinesh (31)—were arrested. Investigations continue to identify other participants in the lynching.
