New Delhi: Two cousins, including a minor, were killed in a hit-and-run accident on Ashoka Road while returning home after watching an Indian Premier League (IPL) match, police said on Tuesday.
The victims have been identified as Yagya Bhatia (20) and Abhav Bhatia (14), residents of Ashok Nagar. The tragic incident occurred late Monday night when their motorcycle was struck by a speeding goods carrier that fled the scene.
Accident near Ashoka Road
According to police, the accident took place around 11 pm near the PNB Complex on Ashoka Road. A PCR call alerted authorities to the incident, following which a team rushed to the spot.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma said officers found the motorcycle lying damaged on the road, while the vehicle involved had already escaped. The two victims were discovered unconscious at the scene.
“They were immediately rushed to the hospital, where they were declared brought dead,” the officer said.
Returning after IPL match
Police said the cousins had gone out earlier in the evening to watch an IPL match between Delhi and Bengaluru. After the match, they began their journey back home.
According to the family, Abhav had called his father around 10.30 pm, informing him that they were on their way back. The accident occurred shortly thereafter.
Case registered, accused identified
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said the offending vehicle has been identified, but the driver remains absconding.
Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the आरोपी, officials added.
Forensic examination conducted
The district crime team visited the site, and a forensic examination was carried out to gather evidence. The bodies of the deceased have been shifted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Young lives cut short
Yagya Bhatia was a B.Sc student, while his younger cousin Abhav was still in school. Their sudden deaths have left the family and local community in shock.
