Two persons died and another is undergoing treatment after allegedly consuming food at a hotel in Vizhinjam, with suspected food poisoning emerging as the likely cause, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Shaji (42), a native of Chadayamangalam, and his mother-in-law, Rashida Beevi (58). Shaji’s wife, aged 39, is currently receiving treatment at Sajimol Parippally Hospital.
Fell ill after eating at hotel
According to police, the family had eaten at Asmak Hotel, located near the Muhyyadddeen Mosque in Vizhinjam. Preliminary information suggests they had consumed fish curry during their visit.
Shaji had reportedly visited the hotel along with his wife, children and mother-in-law. While the two children did not experience any symptoms, Shaji began vomiting and developed health complications shortly after leaving the hotel.
Family members rushed him to the hospital, where he later succumbed. Rashida Beevi, who also fell ill, died during treatment.
Food Safety probe launched
The Food Safety Department has initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning. Officials are expected to collect food samples and inspect hygiene standards at the hotel as part of the inquiry.
Police said further action will be taken based on medical reports and the findings of the Food Safety authorities.
The incident has caused concern among residents, with many urging stricter monitoring of food safety standards in eateries to prevent similar tragedies.
