In a troubling incident highlighting concerns about law and order, two men attacked policemen inside the Lalpur Police Station in Ranchi on Friday, September 6. The assault, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, shows one of the attackers beating a policeman while the officer pleads for assistance.
According to Assistant Sub-Inspector Sunil Murmu, the attackers have been identified as Ravi Ranjan Lakra and Vinod Lakra. The confrontation began when the men were stopped by the police for rash driving around 1 pm. Their vehicle was adorned with a sign claiming affiliation with a BJP working committee member, which they used to intimidate the officers.
During the police check, the men threatened the officers, claiming they would have their uniforms removed. They were subsequently brought to the Lalpur Police Station, where their aggression escalated. Inside the station, the attackers assaulted two officers and vandalised official documents.
The police have filed a case against Ravi Ranjan Lakra and Vinod Lakra under multiple sections, including assault on police, rash driving, obstruction of government work, and misuse of a nameplate. It was later confirmed that the men had no actual ties to any political party, despite their claims.
Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chandan Sinha confirmed that both men have been arrested and are now in judicial custody. The incident has raised significant concerns about the declining credibility of law and order in the region.
The viral video of the attack has drawn widespread attention and criticism.
