Hardoi: A four-year-old girl died in Uttar Pradesh‘s Hardoi district after reportedly consuming an entire bottle of cough syrup that she mistook for something safe to drink while visiting a relative’s house. The child fell asleep shortly after taking the medicine on Wednesday evening and did not wake up the following morning.

Doctors suspect that an overdose may have caused her death. However, the exact cause is yet to be established, and a post-mortem examination has been conducted to determine what led to the fatal incident.

The incident took place in Peradi village, where the girl had travelled with her mother, Rehana, and grandmother, Shabina Begum, to attend a naming ceremony on November 5.

According to the family, the child was playing inside the house when she picked up a bottle of cough syrup belonging to an elderly relative. The relative, aged around 70, was reportedly suffering from a cough and had taken medicine from the bottle at approximately 7.15 pm on Wednesday.

The child subsequently drank the syrup, apparently mistaking it for a drink. She then approached her grandmother and asked her to close the bottle’s cap. She also reportedly told her grandmother that she had consumed the medicine.

The family said the girl continued playing for some time after drinking the syrup. She later fell asleep, and her relatives initially believed she was tired after the day’s activities.

Family discovers child unresponsive the next morning

The girl’s condition became a concern when she did not wake up the following morning. According to the family, she remained asleep until around 10 am on Thursday, prompting her relatives to check on her.

When they realised that she was not responding normally, the family rushed her to a local doctor for medical assistance. After examining the child, the doctor reportedly advised them to take her to a medical college for further treatment.

The family then shifted her to the medical college. However, doctors declared her dead at approximately 11.45 am on Thursday.

The time between the reported consumption of the cough syrup and the discovery of the child’s unresponsive condition has raised concerns about the possible effects of the medicine. The family suspects that drinking the entire bottle may have led to an overdose.

Shabina Begum said the cough syrup belonged to an elderly relative and had been kept inside the house. She also described how the child had approached her after consuming the medicine and asked her to put the cap back on the bottle.

The family initially did not appear to anticipate the seriousness of the situation, as the girl continued playing before going to sleep.

Doctors suspect overdose but await post-mortem findings

Dr Amit Anand, in-charge of the medical college’s emergency department, said the child was brought to the hospital in a dead condition.

He said an electrocardiogram (ECG) examination showed no heartbeat when the girl was brought in. The family informed the medical team that she had accidentally consumed the entire bottle of cough syrup.

According to Dr Anand, an overdose could have been responsible for the death. However, he stressed that the exact cause would be established through the post-mortem examination.

The doctor’s statement indicates that the suspected overdose has not yet been confirmed as the cause of death. Medical findings from the examination will be important in determining whether the medicine played a direct role in the incident.

The family is awaiting the findings as it comes to terms with the sudden loss of the child.

Doctor warns against giving cough syrup without medical advice

Dr Anand also cautioned parents and caregivers against administering cough medicines to young children without consulting a qualified medical professional.

He explained that certain cough syrups contain ingredients that can cause excessive drowsiness in children. Depending on the medicine and the amount consumed, an overdose may lead to serious complications, including breathing difficulties.

Children can be particularly vulnerable to accidental medicine consumption because they may not understand the purpose of medicines or the risks associated with taking them.

The doctor advised parents to follow medical recommendations and prescribed dosage instructions whenever medicines are given to children. He also emphasised the importance of keeping medicines safely stored rather than leaving bottles within children’s reach.

The incident highlights the risks associated with leaving medicines unattended in homes where young children are present. Even medicines commonly used to treat cough and cold symptoms can be harmful if consumed in excessive quantities or without appropriate medical supervision.

Family devastated by the child’s death

The girl was the elder of two daughters. Her death has left the family devastated, with her mother, Rehana, reportedly inconsolable.

What began as a family visit to attend a naming ceremony ended in tragedy after the child reportedly accessed the cough syrup bottle inside the house.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have also drawn attention to the need for greater care when storing medicines in households, particularly during family gatherings where children may move between rooms and access items kept within their reach.

The post-mortem findings are expected to clarify the cause of death and establish whether the suspected cough syrup overdose was responsible. Until the medical findings are available, the overdose remains a preliminary explanation provided by doctors based on the family’s account.

The incident serves as a reminder to parents and caregivers to keep all medicines securely stored and to ensure that children cannot access them without adult supervision.
