Agra/Hyderabad: A software engineer wanted by United States authorities in connection with the alleged murder of his former girlfriend in Maryland has been arrested in Agra after a coordinated investigation by Telangana Police and local authorities. Arjun Sharma, 27, was reportedly hiding in an apartment in the city.
Fugitive traced to Agra
Sharma was allegedly involved in the killing of 27-year-old Nikitha Godishala, who was found dead at his apartment in Maryland on December 31, 2025. US authorities subsequently sought his arrest, while an Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against him.
The investigation eventually brought police to Agra, where Sharma was located at Shankar Green Residential Society in the Ekta police station area. A Telangana Police team arrested him on August 24.
A cheating case helped police find him
According to Telangana Police, a separate cheating complaint filed by Nikitha’s family in April 2026 helped investigators trace Sharma’s movements.
Police followed the leads from that case and located him in Agra. After confirming the US extradition request, authorities alerted the Central Bureau of Investigation and proceeded with the arrest.
The cheating case also names Sharma and his mother in connection with allegations including criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating and destruction of evidence.
Delhi court clears extradition path
Following his arrest, Sharma was produced before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at the Patiala House Court in Delhi.
The court observed that the charges against him meet the criteria for extradition under the India-US Extradition Treaty. Proceedings relating to the US extradition request and supporting evidence are now underway.
The case highlights how a cross-border investigation, supported by an international alert and a separate domestic complaint, eventually led investigators to the accused in India. Further legal proceedings will determine his extradition and the next steps in the US murder case.
