New Delhi: Indian students are increasingly reconsidering the United States as a higher education destination, with applications to US colleges falling by 15% amid tighter immigration and visa policies.
According to a recent Common App report, applications from India declined 15% in the 2025–26 cycle compared with the previous year. The report covers more than 1,100 US institutions.
Visa uncertainty weighs on student plans
The decline comes as international students face greater uncertainty over visa approvals, immigration requirements and opportunities after graduation. While overall undergraduate applications to US colleges increased for the 2026–27 academic year, international applications fell by about 10%.
India remains a major source of international students for the US. More than 3.63 lakh Indian students were enrolled at American institutions during the 2024–25 academic year, highlighting the importance of the country to US higher education.
Recent changes have added to concerns. From September 15, new rules are set to replace the long-standing Duration of Status system for certain international students with fixed periods of authorised stay, creating additional uncertainty for those planning longer programmes.
Students look for safer alternatives
The changing environment is encouraging Indian families to examine destinations based on affordability, visa stability and employment prospects rather than reputation alone.
India is also becoming a stronger option, with foreign universities receiving approval to establish campuses in the country, including institutions planning programmes in technology and innovation.
For many Indian students, the dream of studying abroad remains strong. However, the latest figures suggest that certainty and career security are becoming just as important as a prestigious international degree.
