Following a confrontation in Muzaffarnagar’s Civil Lines area, an Uttar Pradesh Police head constable shot and killed a teacher, an official said on Monday.
Superintendent of Police (City) Satyanarain Parjapat said that the victim, Dharmendra Kumar, was a member of a team from the education department from Varanasi that had brought copies of the Uttar Pradesh Board examination to the nearby SD Inter college.
He mentioned that a police team from Varanasi was with them, along with two employees from class four and one additional teacher.
When the incident occurred on Sunday night, he said, the two teams from the education department and the Varanasi police were waiting in a car for the college gate to open.
Kumar had a confrontation with head constable Chander Prakash while they were in the vehicle. Prakash shot at Kumar using his service weapon, the officer said.
The injured teacher was rushed to the district hospital where he was declared dead, the SP said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem and a case has been registered against the head constable. All others present in the vehicle have been taken into custody for questioning, he said.
