Vellore: Nearly 200 postgraduate and intern doctors staged a protest on Friday outside the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai after a 40-year-old male attender of a patient allegedly assaulted a 23-year-old female intern doctor in the female ward.

According to hospital sources, the incident occurred after the doctor had checked a patient’s blood pressure and moved on to another case. The attender reportedly began calling out to her repeatedly. As she was occupied with another patient, she couldn’t respond immediately.

The man, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, allegedly grabbed the intern by the neck with both hands and pushed her against a wall. A second female intern who attempted to intervene was also reportedly pushed by the same individual.

A nearby male postgraduate doctor stepped in and restrained the man, preventing further harm. Police officials, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police, and the hospital dean arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and assured the doctors that appropriate action would be taken.

The incident prompted strong condemnation from the medical fraternity, with the protesting doctors demanding stricter security measures and swift justice.
