Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for congratulating him on his party’s strong performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Taking to social media platform X, Vijay acknowledged the messages from both leaders and stressed that governance and public welfare would remain his top priorities as he prepares to assume a larger political role in the state.
Focus on welfare and cooperation
Responding to Prime Minister Modi’s message, Vijay expressed gratitude and highlighted his commitment to the people of Tamil Nadu. He also indicated a willingness to work with the Union government for the state’s development.
“Thank you, Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi for your greetings. The well-being of our people remains our only goal. Transcending politics, we shall focus on the state’s progress and the welfare of people of Tamil Nadu. We look forward to the Union Government’s support in this endeavour,” Vijay said.
Earlier, Modi had congratulated Vijay and his party for their “impressive performance” in the elections and reiterated the Centre’s commitment to supporting Tamil Nadu’s growth.
Acknowledges Rahul Gandhi’s wishes
Vijay also responded to Rahul Gandhi’s message, thanking him for his call and kind wishes. Gandhi had described the mandate as a reflection of the rising influence of youth in Indian politics.
“My sincere thanks to the Honorable Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the call and kind wishes. We shall remain committed to excellence in public service and preserving the cultural ethos of our state,” Vijay said.
He further emphasised the importance of collective cooperation in ensuring the welfare and development of Tamil Nadu.
Historic debut for TVK
Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has made a remarkable entry into electoral politics by emerging as the single largest party in the state. The party secured nearly 35 per cent vote share (34.92 per cent) in its debut election, signalling a major shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
The result marks a disruption to the long-standing dominance of regional parties such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Founded in February 2024, TVK’s rapid rise is unprecedented, making it the first party in Tamil Nadu to come to power within just over two years of its formation.
Government formation underway
Vijay has won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies. As per electoral rules, he is expected to vacate one of the seats, which would bring down the party’s effective tally to 107 until a bypoll is conducted.
According to party sources, Vijay has written to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, staking claim to form the government. In his communication, he stated that TVK had secured 108 seats and, as the single largest party, should be invited to form the government.
“We request an opportunity to demonstrate our majority,” Vijay said in his message to the Governor.
Conclusion
Vijay’s response to congratulatory messages from leaders across the political spectrum reflects a conciliatory and cooperative approach as he steps into governance. With a strong electoral debut and a clear mandate, TVK’s rise signals a new chapter in Tamil Nadu politics, with expectations now focused on how the party translates its promise into governance.
