Chennai: In a dramatic political shift, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has taken a strong lead in 109 out of 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, signalling a major challenge to the long-standing dominance of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
As per trends around 1:42 pm, the AIADMK was leading in 57 seats, DMK in 49, Indian National Congress in four, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in one.
Stunning debut disrupts political duopoly
TVK’s performance marks one of the most remarkable electoral debuts in recent Tamil Nadu politics. For decades, the state’s political landscape has been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK, but the current trends suggest a potential shift towards a three-way contest.
Vijay, leveraging his massive fan base and public appeal, appears to have successfully translated his popularity in cinema into political support. Despite lacking prior political experience, he has positioned himself as a credible alternative to established parties.
Fan clubs turn into political machinery
A key factor behind TVK’s surge has been its strong grassroots network, largely built from Vijay’s extensive fan clubs across Tamil Nadu. These fan associations, operating under the banner of “Vijay Makkal Iyakkam,” have been actively engaged in social service activities for years.
Party leaders credited this network for effectively taking Vijay’s message to every household. The cadre, described as “young and unrelenting,” reportedly worked tirelessly during the campaign, ensuring high visibility for the party across constituencies.
Strategic planning and candidate selection
Vijay formally launched TVK in February 2024 and quickly moved to establish a structured political framework. By March 2026, the party had announced candidates for all 234 constituencies, including 26 women candidates.
The candidate selection process was reportedly based on extensive surveys assessing winnability and grassroots connect. Vijay emphasised that voters would effectively be voting for him through his chosen nominees, reinforcing a centralised leadership approach.
The party’s flag, unveiled in August 2024, features bright red and yellow colours with the ‘Vaagai’ flower—symbolising victory—flanked by two elephants.
Ideology and campaign messaging
TVK’s slogan, ‘Pirappokkum Ella Uyirkum’ (all are equal by birth), reflects its focus on equality and inclusive governance. Vijay positioned the 2026 elections as a contest between what he termed a “people’s alliance” and the ruling DMK.
During the campaign, Vijay sharply criticised both DMK and AIADMK, accusing them of failing to meet public expectations. He also targeted the BJP, calling it an ideological opponent.
Among his key promises were transparent governance, corruption-free administration, and stronger state control over education. He also echoed widespread opposition in Tamil Nadu to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and advocated moving education back to the state list.
New faces strengthen party base
Several prominent individuals joined TVK in its early stages, adding to its organisational strength. Political figures such as N Anand, former Indian Revenue Service officer K G Arunraj, and strategist John Arokiyasamy brought administrative and campaign expertise to the party.
Their involvement helped shape TVK’s political strategy and broaden its appeal beyond Vijay’s fan base.
Conclusion: A new political force emerges
The early trends indicate that TVK could significantly alter Tamil Nadu’s political dynamics by breaking the traditional DMK-AIADMK duopoly. While final results are awaited, Vijay’s strong showing suggests that voters are open to change and willing to back new leadership.
If the trend continues, Tamil Nadu may witness the rise of a powerful new political force, reshaping the state’s political future and redefining electoral competition.
