Parappana Agrahara Central Jail has once again come under scrutiny after viral videos surfaced online allegedly showing inmates leading a relatively comfortable lifestyle inside the high-security prison.
Viral footage sparks outrage
The widely circulated videos appear to show prisoners using smartphones and watching content on platforms such as Netflix. In one clip, inmates are also heard casually discussing cricket, including the ongoing Indian Premier League, raising concerns about access to unauthorised devices.
Sources indicate that the footage was recorded on March 27 by inmates lodged in connection with a murder case and later shared with contacts outside the prison, leading to its rapid spread on social media.
Phones hidden, staff under scanner
Preliminary investigations suggest that mobile phones were concealed in underground pipelines near prison toilets to avoid detection. Authorities are also probing possible involvement or negligence at the staff level.
Following the incident, the devices seen in the videos have been seized, and an FIR has been registered.
Action taken, probe intensifies
Officials stated that strict measures had been introduced recently under the leadership of Alok Kumar, Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services), to curb illegal activities.
In the wake of the controversy, three prison officials have reportedly been suspended, and a detailed inquiry has been launched to identify lapses and fix accountability.
Repeat incidents raise concerns
This is not the first time such allegations have surfaced. In previous instances, videos had emerged showing inmates allegedly hosting parties, including consumption of illicit liquor reportedly brewed using fruits from the prison canteen.
There have also been reports of birthday celebrations and access to entertainment facilities by inmates, including those accused in serious crimes.
Spotlight on prison management
The recurring nature of such incidents has raised serious questions about prison administration, monitoring systems, and enforcement within one of the city’s most prominent correctional facilities.
As investigations continue, the latest episode has intensified calls for stricter oversight and reforms to ensure security protocols are effectively implemented.
