In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, social media has become a hotbed for misinformation, particularly between Indian and Pakistani users. A viral video showing a flaming aircraft crash has sparked false claims and conflicting narratives from both sides.

The video, which depicts thick black smoke billowing from a crash site in an open field, has been misused by various accounts to spread unverified information. Some Pakistan-based handles alleged it showed a Rafale fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) shot down near the Line of Control (LoC). Conversely, several Indian users claimed it depicted a Pakistani F-16 destroyed by the IAF near Sialkot.

However, a reverse image search reveals the truth: the video is from June 2024, when an IAF Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Shirasgaon near Nashik, Maharashtra, during a test flight post-overhaul by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Both pilots ejected safely after detecting a technical snag.

This misinformation comes amid escalating tensions following the Pahalgam attack. On April 29, PM Narendra Modi met military leaders and reportedly gave the green light for the armed forces to decide the timing and mode of retaliation. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, claimed that India may initiate military action within 24–36 hours. Cross-border firing was also reported in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pargwal sector.

The incident underscores the dangers of misinformation during periods of heightened national security concerns and emphasizes the need for fact-checking before sharing viral content.
