A viral Reddit post alleging internal fraud and exploitative practices within major food delivery platforms has been exposed as a hoax, triggering widespread online outrage and forcing top executives from DoorDash and Uber Eats to publicly deny the claims.
The controversy began last week when an anonymous post on Reddit claimed to be written by a whistleblower developer at a food delivery firm. The post alleged the use of internal tools such as a so-called “desperation score” to manipulate driver pay. It rapidly went viral, garnering over 87,000 upvotes and millions of views across social media platforms.
Fake documents and AI deception
To lend credibility, the anonymous user shared what appeared to be an 18-page internal document and an employee badge linked to Uber Eats. However, journalist Casey Newton later revealed that the documents and badge image were AI-generated and entirely fabricated. Reddit moderators subsequently deleted the post.
Executives respond swiftly
Although no company was explicitly named, DoorDash CEO Tony Xu responded within hours, stating on X that the allegations did not reflect DoorDash’s culture and that such behaviour would not be tolerated. Uber Eats COO Andrew MacDonald also dismissed the claims as “completely made up” and urged users to be cautious about believing viral posts.
Both companies reiterated their commitment to ethical practices, with DoorDash publishing a blog post explaining how its systems actually function.
Why this matters
The episode highlights how convincingly misinformation can spread in the age of AI. When false stories align with existing concerns about the gig economy, they can gain rapid traction. Experts say swift, transparent responses are now essential for brands to prevent misinformation from becoming permanently associated with their names.
