A 20-second video circulating widely on social media shows a group of men barging into a room where a woman, partially clothed, and a man are seen. As the clip progresses, a child is shown crying on a bed while the woman, also in tears, attempts to cover herself. Many online users have falsely claimed the video depicts a Bangladeshi Hindu family being abused, with some alleging it shows a woman being raped in front of her child.

The video gained traction after being shared by verified accounts on X (formerly Twitter), such as Yati Sharma (@yati_Official1) on March 4, who captioned it with: “What’s happening in Bangladesh? Where’s the Human Rights Commission? A Hindu family is being tortured, are they blind to this?” The post received over 415,000 views, 3,100 likes, and 2,100 shares. Another verified account, @ManojSh28986262, reposted the same clip with an identical caption.

The video was also shared on Facebook by a user from Bangladesh, MD Mollick Hasan, on February 25, with a message condemning the incident.

However, our investigation reveals the video’s true origin. After conducting a reverse-image search, we traced it to a report identifying the man as Noor Mohammad Mridha, a jailer in Munshiganj, Bangladesh. The clip is from March 2024, capturing Mridha’s illicit relationship with a prisoner’s wife. It has no connection to communal violence or any atrocities against Hindus.

In conclusion, the video, which falsely sparked outrage, depicts a personal scandal, not a communal attack.
