Bhubaneswar: In a video message, VK Pandian, who is considered very close to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik announced retirement from active politics following the Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) poll debacle in the recently concluded Odisha state Assembly elections.
Pandian, a close aide of Naveen Patnaik, expressed his apologies to BJD workers and leaders, acknowledging that his involvement may have contributed to their loss. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a landslide victory, reducing the BJD’s long-standing dominance to just 51 seats in the 147-member Assembly.
Pandian’s Tamil heritage became a focal point in the BJP’s campaign, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizing that the BJP’s Chief Minister nominee would be an Odia native. Allegations also surfaced that Pandian might assume the role of CM if the BJD won again, citing Patnaik’s health concerns.
Former CM Naveen Patnaik defended Pandian, calling the criticism “unfortunate” and highlighting his contributions during crises like cyclones and the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandian thanked the Biju Parivar members and reaffirmed his enduring commitment to Odisha and Patnaik.
