Kasargod: “Good morning, this is Vinsha Aneesh reading the news.” With those words, the newly launched student-run radio station at Kasargod Government Higher Secondary School began broadcasting across the campus.
Named Radio Thenvarikka, the initiative—led by the school’s Social Science Club—aims to enhance students’ general knowledge, develop communication skills, and promote healthy entertainment to keep youth away from harmful distractions like substance abuse. Fifteen students form the core editorial team, trained in news collection, editing, and presentation.
Each day begins with a news bulletin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a music-entertainment slot at 1:30 p.m. Future segments will include interviews, awareness programs, and special features. A dedicated studio has been set up on campus. Student correspondents cover school events, offering real-world exposure to journalism.
The project is coordinated by SPG nodal officer and Social Science Club convener C.K. Madanan, with tech support from Madhu Prashanth. The station was inaugurated by Municipal Chairperson Abbas Begum, with Headmistress A Usha presiding.
Meanwhile, Kolathur Government High School has launched its own radio station, Gramyam@11072, thanks to Rs 1.5 lakh in funding from Gramyam, a Gulf-based alumni group. The station covers school, village, and educational news.
MLA C.H. Kunjambu inaugurated both radio projects, with local leaders and school officials in attendance. A highlight of the Kolathur event was the felicitation of student K. Shijin Raj, who recently interacted with astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla aboard the ISS.
