On Monday, the maximum temperature soared to 40 degrees Celsius in several southern parts of West Bengal, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a heat wave warning in various districts. Bankura and Bishnupur recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius, while other areas such as Bardhaman, Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Murshidabad, and Sriniketan experienced temperatures ranging from 35 to 36 degrees Celsius. Purulia, Medinipur, and Panaghar recorded temperatures of 38.5 degrees Celsius. Kolkata registered a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius in the afternoon.
The Met Department issued a yellow warning for “hot and discomfort days” until Tuesday for several districts, including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Murshidabad, and Nadia.
The Met Department stated that heatwaves would persist in one or two places in Purulia, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, and Paschim Bardhaman districts until Friday. Officials anticipate dry weather with increasing humidity and expect a further rise in day temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next three days.
In contrast, several areas in the northern part of the state experienced rain and thunderstorms. Following a thunderstorm that claimed five lives and left over 100 injured in Jalpaiguri district on Sunday, the IMD issued an orange alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar districts.
