Kolkata : In a horrifying incident that shook the locality of Patashpur in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district, a man was apprehended by authorities after he allegedly killed his wife and proceeded to roam the area with her severed head. According to witnesses, the accused, identified as Gautam Guchait, reportedly used a makeshift weapon to brutally end the life of his wife, Phoolrani Guchait, before exiting his residence while carrying her decapitated head along with the murder weapon.
Eyewitnesses further stated that Guchait then proceeded to a nearby tea shop where he sat down, placing the severed head and the weapon on either side of him. The violent demeanor of the accused left bystanders too afraid to approach him. Eventually, law enforcement officials from the Patashpur police station intervened and took Guchait into custody, as recounted by a local resident.
Reports suggest that Guchait, who worked as a hawker, had been experiencing marital discord with his wife, purportedly due to suspicions of her infidelity. The couple shared a young son who is currently in primary school.
Following the incident, the police retrieved the victim’s body for post-mortem examination and detained the accused’s parents for questioning. Community members informed authorities that Guchait appeared to be mentally unstable.
Notably, Guchait had a prior encounter with law enforcement in March 2021 when he was arrested for trespassing into a lion’s enclosure at the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata. Despite sustaining minor injuries, he survived the ordeal.
