Papa Francis, a figure deeply cherished by millions, including in India, has been laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, in line with his wishes. His funeral was attended by dignitaries from around the world, including Indian President Droupadi Murmu, honoring a leader whose influence crossed all religious lines. His lifelong advocacy for peace, interfaith harmony, and care for the environment endeared him to people across the globe, making him a spiritual leader for all, not just the Catholic Church.

Although Papa Francis never visited India, he always held a special connection with the country. In a memorable Ad Limina visit in 2019, during a meeting with Indian bishops, the Pope expressed his desire to visit India but noted that plans had to be abandoned due to a lack of an official invitation from the Indian government. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited the Pope in 2021, there was hope for this long-awaited visit, but unfortunately, the invitation was never formalized.

Throughout his papacy, Papa Francis showed his affection for India, appointing Cardinal Oswald Gracias to his advisory group and elevating other Indian bishops, including Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão and Cardinal Anthony Poola. He also recognized several Indian saints, including Mother Teresa, whose life of service greatly inspired him.

Papa Francis’ deep care for marginalized communities, including India’s migrant populations, was a testament to his empathy, as seen in his appointments and messages. His memory will continue to inspire, as his heart embraced the entire world.
