A Delhi consumer commission has directed an airline to pay Rs 1.5 lakh in compensation after a woman and her infant son were made to wait for nearly 10 hours on board a flight, according to a report by The Indian Express.
The commission observed that the prolonged wait caused considerable inconvenience to the mother and her young child and held that the airline’s service fell short of the expected standard.
Mother and infant endured prolonged wait
The case concerned a woman who was travelling with her baby when the flight was delayed for several hours. The mother and child reportedly remained on board during the prolonged wait.
The consumer commission took into account the difficulties faced by the woman while travelling with an infant. It observed that passengers, particularly those travelling with very young children, require reasonable care and assistance during extended delays.
Airline directed to pay compensation
The Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission held that the airline was responsible for the deficiency in service and directed it to pay Rs 1.5 lakh to the woman.
The commission’s order highlights the responsibilities of airlines towards passengers during prolonged disruptions and delays.
The case also draws attention to the additional difficulties faced by parents travelling with infants, who may require feeding, changing and other essential care during long waits.
The compensation ordered by the consumer commission was intended to address the hardship and inconvenience suffered by the woman and her child.
The ruling serves as a reminder that airlines are expected to provide appropriate assistance to passengers when prolonged delays or other service disruptions occur.
