Prayagraj: A 25-year-old woman climbed a 100-foot-high mobile tower in Umaria Badal village in Prayagraj on Tuesday, demanding that she be allowed to marry her boyfriend and threatening to jump if his family continued to oppose the relationship.
Woman takes extreme step over marriage dispute
According to police, the woman, a resident of Bahiropur Kuda village in Nawabganj, has been in a relationship with a 27-year-old man from the same village for nearly two years.
She claimed that her own family had agreed to the marriage, but her boyfriend’s family was opposed to the union. She reportedly travelled to Umaria Badal village by cycle and climbed the mobile tower, insisting that the marriage be solemnised.
The incident prompted concern among local residents as the woman threatened to jump if her demand was not accepted.
Police and officials try to bring her to safety
Senior police officers and administrative officials reached the spot and began efforts to persuade the woman to come down safely. The authorities continued negotiations with her as they worked to prevent any harm.
Police also said that the woman had lodged an FIR against the same man and his family members in August last year in connection with the marriage dispute.
The incident has drawn attention to the emotional pressures that can arise when relationships face opposition from families. Authorities are continuing to handle the matter while prioritising the woman’s safety.
