Woman consumed rat poison mixed with rice
The woman, identified as Shobha Vasudev Dalvi, reportedly mixed rat poison paste with cooked rice and consumed it at her home on September 5 while her son was away to attend Dahi Handi celebrations, according to police.
Her health deteriorated after she consumed the rice. Her son later took her to a nearby hospital, where doctors advised that she be shifted to Sion Hospital in Mumbai for further treatment.
Dalvi died while undergoing treatment at the Mumbai hospital on September 9, police said.
Police register accidental death report
According to the Khadakpada police, Dalvi had reportedly been experiencing mental health difficulties. Police said there was no indication of criminal involvement based on the hospital records and the statement provided by her son.
An accidental death report was registered on September 18 following her death. Police said the woman’s son did not suspect any criminal activity in connection with the incident.
The incident has drawn attention to the need for care when storing rat poison and other toxic household substances, particularly in homes where vulnerable family members may have access to them.
