Erode: A young woman from Tamil Nadu died after reportedly attempting a home delivery by following online videos instead of seeking medical assistance at a hospital, prompting health authorities and police to launch separate investigations into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Sasikala, a resident of Thalavaypalayam near Uthukuli in Erode district. She is survived by her husband, Karthik, and their four-year-old daughter.
Family opted for home birth
According to preliminary information, Sasikala was pregnant with the couple’s second child and the family had reportedly decided to opt for a natural delivery at home instead of going to a hospital.
Officials said the family allegedly relied on online videos for guidance during the delivery process.
On June 24, Sasikala gave birth to a baby girl at home. However, shortly after the delivery, she reportedly developed severe complications and suffered excessive bleeding.
Family members then rushed her to the Government Medical College Hospital in Perundurai for treatment.
Shifted to private hospital
Due to the seriousness of her condition, doctors later referred Sasikala to a private hospital in Coimbatore for advanced medical care.
Despite treatment, she could not be saved and died at the hospital.
The condition of the newborn child has not been officially disclosed.
Authorities launch inquiry
The incident has prompted an inquiry by the District Health Department, which is examining the circumstances that led the family to opt for a home delivery and whether adequate medical guidance had been sought during the pregnancy.
The Tamil Nadu Health Department is also expected to review whether there were any lapses in awareness regarding maternal healthcare and institutional deliveries.
Meanwhile, the Uthukuli Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Officials said statements are being recorded from family members and others connected to the case.

Health experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of institutional deliveries and professional medical supervision during childbirth, particularly because complications such as excessive bleeding can develop unexpectedly and require immediate treatment.
Government health programmes across India have been promoting hospital deliveries to reduce maternal and infant mortality and to ensure that emergency care is available when complications arise.
The incident has drawn attention to the risks associated with unsupervised home deliveries and the growing influence of online content in guiding medical decisions without professional consultation.
Authorities said further investigation is underway and a detailed report is expected after the completion of the inquiry.
