A shocking case of alleged medical negligence has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district, where two unqualified individuals were arrested for allegedly conducting a caesarean surgery at an unregistered private hospital, leading to the death of a woman during childbirth.
The accused have been identified as Yogesh Verma (32), a BA graduate from Malipur, and Shubham Vishwakarma (19), an intermediate student from Sultanpur. They allegedly performed surgeries at Navjeevan Hospital in Baskhari without any recognised medical degree or surgical qualification.
Woman dies after surgery complications
The deceased, Priyanka, was admitted on February 5 for delivery. Police said the duo conducted a caesarean section, after which she delivered a baby girl. However, she reportedly suffered excessive bleeding and did not regain consciousness following anaesthesia.
As her condition worsened, she was referred to Lucknow, where she died. The incident sparked protests by the victim’s family. The hospital operator, identified as Ruby, fled and remains absconding.
Hospital sealed after joint inspection
Baskhari SHO Sunil Kumar Pandey said Yogesh allegedly learned basic procedures while assisting his father, a ward boy at a Community Health Centre. Shubham reportedly gained experience by observing procedures after completing Class 12.
Police sources said the duo charged between ₹3,000 and ₹5,000 per caesarean — far below standard rates — attracting poor patients.
Following directions from the Chief Medical Officer, a joint inspection was conducted by health officials, the sub-divisional magistrate and police. Authorities found the hospital operating illegally from four rooms of a residential building without registration, biomedical waste authorisation, fire NOC or qualified staff. Medicines and surgical equipment were seized, and the premises were sealed.
An FIR has been lodged under relevant sections, including BNS 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Further investigation is underway to identify other facilities linked to the accused.
Officials have warned of strict action against illegal healthcare establishments in the district.
