A 22-year-old woman died of suspected suffocation while taking a shower at her residence in Jalandhar on Thursday, following a gas leak from a geyser.

The deceased has been identified as Munmun Chitwan, daughter of Deepak Kamboj, Shiv Sena’s North India chief. The incident occurred on her birthday, which coincided with the New Year, turning a day of celebration into one of tragedy for the family.

Gas leak inside bathroom proves fatal

According to preliminary police reports, Munmun entered the bathroom to take a shower when gas reportedly began leaking from the geyser installed inside. As the gas accumulated in the enclosed space, she is believed to have experienced breathing difficulties and lost consciousness.

“When she did not come out for a long time, family members knocked on the door but got no response. Suspecting something was wrong, they broke open the door and found her unconscious,” a police officer said.

She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Initial medical opinion suggests that she died due to suffocation caused by inhalation of gas.

Family preparing for birthday celebrations

Deepak Kamboj said the family had made special arrangements at home to celebrate Munmun’s birthday and the New Year. Relatives and friends had been invited, and preparations were underway when the tragic incident occurred.

“The entire family is in shock. What was meant to be a joyous day has become the darkest day of our lives,” Kamboj reportedly told acquaintances.

Munmun was described by relatives as cheerful and full of life, making the sudden loss even more devastating for the family.

Police investigation underway

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death and to rule out any other factors. Officials said further action would be taken based on the post-mortem report.

The body was cremated later on Thursday afternoon.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of gas geysers, especially in enclosed bathrooms, and the need for proper ventilation and regular maintenance to prevent such fatal accidents.
