A tragic incident was reported from Prayagraj district in Uttar Pradesh, where a woman and her five-month-old daughter died after the woman allegedly jumped into a well with the infant. Police have arrested two family members on charges of abetment of suicide.
Incident reported from Badgauna Khurd village
According to the police, the incident took place on Friday in Badgauna Khurd village in the Yamuna Nagar region of Prayagraj. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kaurihara) Abdus Salam Khan said the woman was identified as Sonam Patel.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and, with the assistance of local villagers, retrieved the bodies of the woman and her infant daughter from the well. Both bodies were subsequently sent for post-mortem examination.
Family alleges harassment
The ACP said a complaint was lodged by the deceased woman’s brother, alleging that Sonam was driven to take the extreme step due to harassment. The complaint named her husband, Shiv Babu, and his brother-in-law, Laxman Patel, accusing them of abetting her suicide.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Accused arrested, probe underway
Police confirmed that both the accused have been arrested and further legal proceedings are in progress. Investigators are also examining the circumstances that led to the incident and recording statements from family members and villagers.
The deaths of the young woman and her infant have cast a pall of gloom over the village, with residents expressing shock and sorrow over the tragedy.
Officials said further details would emerge after the completion of the post-mortem and investigation.
